Thomas Fernandez shown above at pre-op and 50lbs lighter only one month after surgery!

Thomas is known for being the Piolin por la Manana Show Producer for Univision Radio in Los Angeles.

Ok, I’m only 24 years old but by the time I was 23 I was 325 lbs. My jeans were a size 56. I remember being teased because of my weight and my nephew who is like a son to me calling me “fat”, which is what hurt me the most. I had no luck with the ladies and at my job I was going nowhere. I had tried dieting and regular exercise programs but nothing was working until one day my mom heard el Piolin por la manana and the surgery he had done and how well it worked for him. So we decided to go to the seminar about the surgeries and that’s when I decided that I was going to have it - in less than a month. On Sept 10 2007 I went into my surgery weighing in at a whopping 325 lbs and a 56-58 inch waist. But one year later I’m 24 years old 127 lbs lighter and a 36-38 inch waist! I’m definitely getting more attention from the ladies, and I’ve gotten a promotion at my job! I feel better than I ever have, thanks to Dr. Owens. I literally owe him my life.

My life was changed on the day of surgery. The Gastric Sleeve has changed me from size 22 to a size 13. I have lost over 60 pounds in almost 4 months. I feel happy, my life changed I can now go for walks without loosing my breath after the first five steps and my kids can now give me a complete bear hug not a half a hug. The back pain is now completely gone and shopping is fun. I didn’t tell my children ahead of time that I was going to have surgery I didn’t want them to worry. I did tell the rest of my family and a few friends though. Everyone was supportive of me. Now that I’ve lost so much weight, a lot of my friends are asking me more about it!

Obesity runs in my family and I have had a weight problem since 1980. Every diet I tried worked for a while and then I would gain it back plus a few more. I got to the point where I was a “pathological dieter”; the harder I tried, the worse it got. Finally about 10 years ago I gave up completely and boy did the pounds pack on then. I had so many aches and pains, walking was an issue and I slept my way thru Eastern Europe on a trip with my family. Compounding the problem were high blood pressure, sleep apnea, back pain, reflux and all the other obnoxious things that go with being overweight; fitting in theatre seats or airplane seats – not fun. Finally a couple of years ago, I started thinking seriously about getting help. I spent hours on the internet searching for solutions and investigating doctors. I spent time in a program explaining the process of surgery and helping me to understand that it wasn’t totally my fault – heredity can be a bugger. I spoke with a good friend who had bypass surgery with Dr. Owens about 5 years ago and she highly recommended him, so I decided to make an appointment. I immediately felt at ease with Dr Owens and we spoke for a long time about the options available and what I should expect. My insurance does not cover this type of treatment, so I had to make not only a health decision, but a financial decision as well. I told Dr. Owens that I was giving myself a new car (the surgery). His response was that I would be much happier with this “new car” than anything off a showroom floor. Here I am, 2 weeks post op and I can tell you he was right. I have lost over 20 pounds and have more energy than I have had in years. I am off the blood pressure meds and walking with ease. I have nothing but praise for Dr. Owens and his staff; they are there to help you in every step of the way. I look forward to being a poster child for the vertical sleeve surgery and sharing my story with others who fight the same battle.
